Subject: AW: WG: Leash crashes during startup on windows XP
Date: Mon, 7 Jun 2004 18:18:01 +0200
hello there
i'm running windows xp professional, version 2002 service pack 1
it is connected to the internet via LAN -> ADSL router
the kerberos KDC is in the internet on our corp' server.
i'm not logging in to windows using kerberos, i'm using a local user
account.
i'm able to get my tickets via kinit -5 username, and i can view them with
klist (without any arguments).
klist.exe -c MSLSA: fails with: "Error calling function
LsaCallAuthenticationPackage: 1311
excuse me, i'm not sure if this is the MIT one, i'm running it from
D:\Programme\MIT\Kerberos\bin, but i'm not sure if any klist in any $PATH
thingie is called and not from MIT, i'm not very windows familiar :)
ms2mit fails with the same error message.
after getting credentials via kinit.exe (neither ms2mit nor klist), leash
continues to fail with the old error message.
if you have any further questions, please ask :)
best regards, johannes russek
p.s.: dude, i love kerberos

Please confirm that the file version of leash32.exe as listed in the
Explorer Properties dialog is 2.6.3.20040525.

Is a version of AFS installed on the machine?

Does a File Find for krb5_32.dll list any other copies of this file on
the machine other than the one installed in the \Program
Files\MIT\Kerberos\Bin directory?

Please send the contents of your %WINDIR%\KRB5.INI file.

Does the Leash window appear before the crash?

Does Leash crash if executed from the command line without parameters?
As reported to kerberos@mit.edu:

The Command in "0x7c168f1d" points to memory in "0x0000001c". the
operation "read" couldnt be executed on the memory.

hello
the explorer properties dialog shows in the top 2.6.3.52045, but when i
select productversion from the list on the left, it shows the correct number
2.6.3.20040525
no afs installed, there is no other krb5_32.dll on my system.
the leash windows does not appear, nor does it start when it is executed
from command line without parameters.

Subject: KfW 2.6.3: leash32 out-of-bounds memory access (XP Home)
Download (untitled) / with headers
text/plain 1.1KiB
System: Windows XP Home edition, current with respect to patches.
(Similar problem observed on an XP Pro system as well.)

KfW: 2.6.3

Problem: leash32.exe, when invoked without arguments, triggers an
access violation. Approximate English translation of the error message
(this is the Swedish localisation of XP; hopefully the problem isn't
locale-sensitive):

The instruction at 0x7c168f1d referred to memory at 0x0000001c.
A memory operation could not be performed. The following error
was returned: The memory could not be "read".

Getting tickets with kinit, or with leash32 -i, works. Renewing them
with leash32 -r also works. Destroying them with leash32 -d pops up an
annoying error dialog "There was an error destroying tickets!" but
the destruction seems to succeed (according to klist).
leash32 -a fails in the same way as leash32 without arguments.
leash32 -h works fine, leash32 -m doesn't crash (but on an XP Home
system it's of course non-functional).

I see that Johannes Russek has reported a very similar problem on
2004-06-07, using the German localisation of XP Home. Yes, I am using
leash32.exe 2.6.3.20040525, built by jaltman on
CERBERUS.windows.secure-endpoints.com at 2004-05-26 04:20:11 GMT.
Would you please try the following build and let me know if you are
still experiencing the same problem?

http://web.mit.edu/~jaltman/Public/Leash/MITKerberosForWindows-DEBUG.exe

Thanks.
Have you tried this build yet?

I have uploaded to
http://web.mit.edu/~jaltman/Public/Leash/MITKerberosForWindows-DEBUG.exe
a debug version of KFW containing some fixes for problems discovered in
the last several days.

Please reply when you have tested this build. Let us know if Leash
still crashes or not.

Thanks.

Similar problem, slightly different error message:
unknown software exception (0x80000003) at 0x77f75a58.

And of course there is now something to send to "Microsoft" should one
wish to do so. See attachment. (I hope RT won't strip it.) I'm afraid
the attachment doesn't contain *all* of the information XP would have
sent to Redmond, but I don't know how to grab the rest. (I tried to copy
the .DMP file, but first it was locked, then it was gone.)

leash32 -m now works without complaint, but that wasn't the main issue.

Note: this is a user's laptop, and I have only intermittent access to it.
(He'll be on the road for the next two weeks.) Can perhaps reproduce the
problem on a different machine, but no guarantees.

Message body is not shown because sender requested not to inline it.

Exception 0x80000003 is a hard coded debug break exception. It is
placed in code to trigger a debugger when an assertion fails.

The addresses at which each of you are receiving this exception are not
in the MIT code but within the Microsoft distributed libraries. This
implies that the Microsoft libraries have detected a problem with their
internal state. This problem might be caused by Leash but may also be
caused by a variety of external factors including:

video device drivers
network device drivers
active desktop
shell extensions

I will continue looking into this but I am not sure there will be a cure
in the immediate future.

hello,
is there any way how i can debug this?
i have no clue about debugging software under windows, so *any* hints would
be great.
the funny thing is, just after my first install and first bad start of
leash, i asked a friend of mine to install mit kerberos for windows, and he
had exactly the same error.
should i feel any other errors in my windows install if those external
factors are borken?

If you are interested in installing the debug tools follow the links
from this page:

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/default.mspx

There is a guide to getting started. You will need to install the
Current 32-bit Version of the
Debugger as well. I suggest you use the Microsoft Symbols Server
instead of downloading
the symbols to your machine. This will cause symbols to be downloaded
as needed.

Once the debugger is installed run Leash32.exe from within the
debugger. When the crash
occurs you want to create a dump file. From the debugger command line
you must execute
the command:

.dump /f leash32.dmp

Then open a new session of the debugger and load the dump file you just
created.
Execute the command

.dumpcab leash32-crash.cab

Then send me the .CAB file

KFW 2.6.4 Beta 1 was announced earlier this week. It includes the fix I

Have either of you had an opportunity to either try the DEBUG build I

On Monday this week (2004-06-21) I downloaded your then-current DEBUG
build, tried it, and reported back (to the other RT ticket, #2604) that
the problem was still there. Did you miss that message?

Show quoted text

I'll see about trying a 2.6.4 Beta, if you wish; but I won't have access
to the machine on which the problem was initially diagnosed for the next
ten days. (Time enough for Beta 2?) I can of course try on a different
machine, time permitting, and see what happens.
Sergio:

I replied to you twice on Monday after receiving your message.
At that time, I indicated what you could do if you wanted to setup a
debugger to catch the problem and produce a stack trace.

Later that night (your Tuesday morning), I build my own German Win2003
system and was able to reproduce the problem and I believe it was fixed.
I then uploaded a new DEBUG build and asked that it be tested. Did you
not receive either of these two (or three) messages?

In either case, please test the new binary when you get a chance. Ten
days is most likely too long as Universities need the new builds ASAP in
order to package CDs to give to their students for the Fall semester.

If you can test the 2.6.3 release on another system and reproduce the
crash, and then test 2.6.4 on the system and see that the crash has gone
away I would be happy.

If this is not possible, then I will trust the fact that I was able to
solve the problem on my German Win2003 system.

Thanks for your time.

Didn't get that message. I've just checked both my procmail log and our
mail server log, and the only message I got from you on Monday night
was the one (to #2588) saying that the address was in Microsoft DLLs.

I got one message out of three, apparently the least interesting one.
There *is* on the path an MX server I don't control, so if by any chance
you can get me detailed envelope information (timestamp, envelope sender
--- I'm guessing <www@MIT.EDU> --- and envelope recipient (no typos?))
it will be my pleasure to ask them to look things up.

Tested on XP Professional Swedish.

2.6.4b1: works

Sergio
Thank you for the confirmation. I am going to close this ticket.
A final 2.6.4 should be released some time next week.
