Subject: Issues with Kerb for Windows, Klptr
From: "Jonathan Mendelson" <jmendels@cmu.edu>
To: kfw-bugs@mit.edu
Hello,

I am having problems with Kerberos for Windows v2.6.3. I previously had
CMU's KClient installed, as well as its program Klptr. I
uninstalled/installed a few times, and I'm still having troubles. When I
was reinstalling, and noticed the notes about Klptr (having not noticed
them before), I assumed that Klptr was the problem; but I uninstalled it
and followed the instructions in the installation file about removing its
DLL problems and I'm still having problems with Kerberos.

When I run a program, it brings up Leash, for me to login, but after doing
so, the programs requiring Kerb invariably crash.

I'm on WinXP, by the way.

Any idea of things to try to get it working?

Thanks,
Jonathan
Try the kfw 2.6.4 Beta 2 which was announced last week.

Please report back ASAP whether or not you still have a problem.

I still have the problem, Kerb is locking up.

Please describe your configuration.
How can I reproduce your problem?

Please define "locking up"?
According to CMU, the problem is being caused by the application
klprmon.exe which is being loaded as a service on your machine.

That's just plain wrong, and I call into question the intelligence of
whoever came to that conclusion. He sent me an email saying "The simplest
way to fix the problem is to delete klprmon.dll
from your system32 directory." This would be great, except for the fact
that this I ALREADY deleted this file! Windows doesn't list it as a
process when I push CTRL-ALT-DELETE, which I'm not 100% sure it should but
would guess it would. Even if not, I'm displaying all files in Windows
Explorer (even hidden files and such) and the alphabetical listing goes
directly from keymgr.dll to kmddsp.tsp.

There isn't anything unconventional about my WinXP installation that I can
think of.

The only other way I can think of that the problem might still be caused
by this would be if WinXP had some kind of weird system of archiving dll's
so you can't just delete them; but I'm unaware of any such feature.

Let me be clear, this problem has not been resolved.

Jonathan:

Please trace this problem with Gregg Diskin <diskin@andrew.cmu.edu> from
CMU. He believes this is a problem with software CMU distributed and
not KFW. He is responsible for the distribution of KFW at CMU. If
this is not the case, it is a problem with KFW and I will fix it.

However, before I can do so you must respond to my second e-mail from
last night. I need to know:

* what software you are running?

* is the software using kclient? kerberos 4? kerberos 5? or Leash
interfaces?

You have described the problem both as a crash and a hang.

* if there is a crash, what is crashing? where is the error?

* if there is a hang? define what you mean by a hang?

Please perform all testing using KFW 2.6.4 Beta 2.

Thank you.

I have been running KFW 2.6.4 Beta 2. It says that it's Kerberos 4. The
process is this:

I open a Kerb enabled program like NiftyTelnet
Kerb pops up and asks for a user/password
I type in the user/pass and push enter
Kerb stops responding, and so does NiftyTelnet

It works like this with the other Kerb enabled programs as well.

Also, what I mean by "hang" is that it simply stops responding to any
input at all, and everything in the app goes blank (as it does for other
programs in Windows that hang).

I do not use NiftyTelnet but I have tested this code with other Kerberos
4 Telnet clients without problem.

I will see if I can get a copy of Nifty Telnet to try.
Every link I see for Nifty Telnet says it is a Macintosh application.
Where would I get a copy for Windows?

It's internal to CMU. But I get the exact same problem with Mulberry and
KerbFTP.

Gregg has tested KFW 2.6.4 with all of the CMU distributed and supported
applications without problems.

I have tested this code against Kermit 95 (telnet and ftp) and Eudora
(POP and IMAP) all without problems.

There is something different about your machine. The question to answer
is "what is it?".

A couple of diagnostic questions:

* Are you able to obtain tickets manually by requesting them with Leash?

* Do your application hang when you already possess a Kerberos 4 TGT?

* What are the contents of the KRB.CON and KRBREALM.CON configuration
files typically found in the directory specified by the %WINDIR%
environment variable?

Clarification on the behavior: after hanging for maybe a minute, I just
noticed that it gave me a message (previously I had terminated the
program, given that it seemed to stop responding). Gives these messages:

Kerberos 5: Cannot contact any KDC for requested realm (error 156)
Kerberos 4: Cannot contact the Kerberos server for the selected realm
(Kerberos error 56)

Cannot contact the Kerberos server for the selected realm (Kerberos error 56)

Sorry for not noticing this earlier.

Anyways, for the other questions:

No. Same problem as above.

There is no bug in KFW. The problem you are experiencing is a
configuration error of
some kind or a collision with an old copy of WSHELP32.DLL which is being
shipped
by some other application on your machine.

Please get help from your local support desk. They support KFW in the
CMU environment.
I am closing this ticket.
