it sounds like something is causing Leash to crash on startup.

double check to make sure that there are not multiple
versions of kfw dlls on the machine.

check to see if "klist -c MSLSA:" succeeds or fails. we know that
the MSLSA: code will crash on machines with a locale requiring the
use of Multi-Byte characters.

Hi Jeff,
No, the user hasn't replied to me after I sent him your last email. I'll
prompt him again, but with the holidays upon us it may be awhile before we
resolve this. I will let you know as soon as I hear anything.
Thanks for your help and concern.

Hi Jeff,
No, please keep it open until I get some answer from the user. I will
prompt him again, even though he didn't reply to my last request. If I
don't hear from him within a reasonable time I'll get back to you.
Thanks,

Hi Gregg and Jeff:

Sorry about the delay in response, but I was out of the office for the
holidays.

Here are a few more pieces of information:

1) I agree that something is causing Lease to crash on startup.

2) I don't see ANY DLLs with kfw anywhere in the file name. I have
checked for multiple copies of the various files associated with
Kerberos and found none in any directory. Likewise, the only DLL in my
system32 directory that I know is associated with Kerberos is
kerberos.dll, but this is a Microsoft file (version 5.1.2600.2180).

3) I can run "klist -c MSLSA:" from the command line and I get the
following results:

Ticket cache: MSLSA:
Default principal: jwh@AD.SEI.CMU.EDU

Valid starting Expires Service principal

You will notice that none of the service principals are associated with
the andrew.cmu.edu domain, but rather all are part of our (sei.cmu.edu)
domain. This output is AFTER running "kinit jh6b" and successfully
obtaining a ticket manually (i.e. NOT through the Lease Ticket Manager).
Likewise, I can run "klist" to produce the following:

Ticket cache: API:krb5cc
Default principal: jh6b@ANDREW.CMU.EDU

Valid starting Expires Service principal
01/07/05 19:00:34 01/08/05 05:00:34
krbtgt/ANDREW.CMU.EDU@ANDREW.CMU.EDU
01/07/05 19:00:53 01/08/05 05:00:34
uniengd/calsched3.andrew.cmu.edu@ANDREW.CM
U.EDU

Kerberos 4 ticket cache: API:krb4cc
Principal: jh6b@ANDREW.CMU.EDU

Issued Expires Principal
01/07/05 19:00:34 01/08/05 05:00:34
krbtgt.ANDREW.CMU.EDU@ANDREW.CMU.EDU

So it is clear that a ticket exists and I am able to successfully launch
Oracle Calendar once I have manually obtained a ticket. However, I am
still unable to launch Lease Ticket Manager to view my ticket(s) or to
obtain a ticket. It continues to open and close immediately when
launched. Thus, I'm not sure what any of this means.

I hope that this information helps. Please let me know what else I can
try or look for on my systems.

Thanks!
-Jay

Would you be able to install a debug build and the windows debugger
in order to capture a stack trace from the crash point?

Sure, I don't mind doing that - if you can provide me with the necessary
tools. Just send me the software, or point me at a location where I can
download it, then let me know what you want me to do in order to provide
you with the stack trace.

Thanks,

Jay:

Let's start by having you install the latest beta client.
You can download a debug build from:

/afs/athena.mit.edu/user/j/a/jaltman/Public/Leash/mit-krb5-1-4-beta-4-debug.exe
\\afs\athena.mit.edu\user\j\a\jaltman\Public\Leash\mit-krb5-1-4-beta-4-debug.exe
http://web.mit.edu/jaltman/Public/Leash/mit-krb5-1-4-beta-4-debug.exe

If this crashes, please download and install:

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/installx86beta.mspx

Once installed, execute leash32.exe from within the debugger. It should
provide the ability to capture the crash. Once you have done so you can
create a dump file of the crash and send it to me. Preferably via afs.

Thanks.

We are waiting for Jay to test code I made available to him last night.

I didn't receive any mail from you since Jan. 7 (last Friday), and this
is the first that I have heard about code being provided. Did you send
it via e-mail? Either way, I would ask that you resend it since I have
not received a copy. Once I have the code, I'll gladly load and test it.

Thanks,
-Jay

You should have received an e-mail from the Request Tracker. :-(

You can always check this ticket via the link:

Here was the message:

Jay:

Let's start by having you install the latest beta client.
You can download a debug build from:

/afs/athena.mit.edu/user/j/a/jaltman/Public/Leash/mit-krb5-1-4-beta-4-debug.exe
\\afs\athena.mit.edu\user\j\a\jaltman\Public\Leash\mit-krb5-1-4-beta-4-debug.exe
http://web.mit.edu/jaltman/Public/Leash/mit-krb5-1-4-beta-4-debug.exe

If this crashes, please download and install:

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/installx86beta.mspx

Once installed, execute leash32.exe from within the debugger. It should
provide the ability to capture the crash. Once you have done so you can
create a dump file of the crash and send it to me. Preferably via afs.

Thanks.

Jeffrey:

I picked this up today and installed/tested it on two different machines
that were experiencing this problem Both machines work fine, and as
expected, with this new version installed. I did get an error on my
first launch of Oracle Calendar (one of our kerberos enabled clients),
but this only occurred one time and has not been seen again. Thus, it
looks like whatever was changed, between the 2.6.4 version that I had
been using and the beta that you provided, has fixed the problem. The
Leash Ticket Manager can be launched manually, or set to launch
automatically on boot, etc. and everything works fine.

Can you give us some idea of what is different and when this version
might come out of beta and be an official release?

Thanks!!

Jay:

I am glad to hear that you believe the problem to be resolved using the
new Kerberos 5 release 1.4 code base. The current release of KFW is
2.6.5 which is built using the Kerberos 5 release 1.3.5 distribution.
Perhaps your bug is fixed in KFW 2.6.5 as well.

The next release of KFW version 3.0 will not take place until next
summer. This is a significant re-write.
