PASSWD="cat /etc/passwd"
will yield a null or very short password file. It needs to use
# How to read the passwd database.
PASSWD="ypcat passwd"
on systems where YP is active for passwords. Some routine that
can query for /etc/nsswitch.conf settings would be the most general
fix for Solaris systems.
